WordPress SEO Tips

If you have a blog powered by WordPress, it’s important to make it easy for people to find what you have to offer and get them to visit your website.

Today I’ll be talking about the power of SEO on your blog. SEO basically means Search Engine Optimization. It helps search engines like Google find you, which in turn lets your audience find you! Easy right?

SEO consists of on-site SEO and off-site SEO. On-site SEO is how you package and present the content of your website to search engines like Google, Yahoo! and Bing. Off-site SEO involves things that you do off-site, to get traffic and links.

On-site SEO: Title, Meta Description, and Tags.

To start, you’re going to want to install an WordPress SEO plugin on your blog. While there are tons to choose from, I recommend the Yoast SEO Plugin. It’s been great to use, and all the instructions are easy to understand. Better still, it works out of the box, so if you really dislike touching any settings on your blog, you can simply install the plugin and it’ll do its thing for you.

Some of the important tasks that you would want to perform include these:

  1. Change the post and page permalink titles (in other words, the URLs)
  2. Add meta descriptions
  3. Add an XML site map.

All these can be done with the Yoast WordPress SEO Plugin.

By changing how the post and page titles are presented, Search Engines will easily be able to identify what content you’re trying to present. I recommend you change the URL for each individual post, as most of the time, your URL will be different from your page title. Simply start a new post, and at the top, you’ll be able to see the Permalink below your page title. Click on Edit and change the URL to whatever you’d want. But it’s important to have your keyword in it.

Now add the Meta Titles and Meta Descriptions to your posts and pages. These are the titles and short descriptions that will appear in search engines for your site. Each page and post has to be configured. This can be done at the bottom of the page if you’ve installed the Yoast SEO plugin. Simple and intuitive.

For the Meta Description, it’s recommended to take a few important elements from the article you’ve written to build a short but succinct summary. It’s good to fill this summary with keywords!

An XML sitemap is a map of your website that allows search engines to “crawl” a website more intelligently and to index it. To enable this feature, go to the XML Sitemaps option in the SEO tab and check only all of the boxes under the XML Sitemap, General Settings and User Sitemap headings.

Off-site SEO: Backlinks and Creating Traffic

Backlinks are basically links from other websites that link back to your site. That’s why they’re called backlinks! Having backlinks indicate to the Search Engines that your content is interesting, making it have higher search engine rankings.

A good way to start backlinking is to share your posts on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Also, install a social media plugin on your website so readers can easily share your article on their social media platforms.

Another great way to create backlinks are to post your articles or URL to free website directories, article directories and bookmarking sites that are peppered around the internet.

Here’s a short explanation of what they are, and where you can find them:

  • A Website Directory is a website where you submit your website address to be added to a list. You only have to do this once. These include SoMuch, EzineDirectory, and Blogarama.com.
  • An Article Directory is a website where you can submit your posts. Some of the most popular article directories are EzineArticles, Goarticles and Reddit.
  • A Bookmarking Site (also known as Web 2.0) is a page where you can add interesting website page links (like yours!). Scoop It! and Hubpages are some examples.

Don’t forget that SEO takes time and practice. It’s important that you stick to it, because it will be highly rewarding for your blog. Persevere and constantly keep SEO in mind. Remember the steps above and you would have done most of the work.
